Report: Mourinho to replace Ferguson as Manchester United boss for 2011⁄12 season

The Daily Star claims that Sir Alex Ferguson will quit as Manchester United manager at the end of next season, to be replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Ferguson will have been manager for an incredible 25 seasons by the end of the 2010/11 season. He has won eleven Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues. He will hope to take that record further and secure an additional Premier League title which will be Manchester United 's nineteenth in total, which is unprecedented in English football.

The Daily Star reports that "United have already lined up the charismatic Mourinho" as Ferguson's replacement. The self-styled 'special one' is currently the coach of Inter Milan but has openly expressed his discontent with Italian football and his desire to return to the Premier League where he has already won two titles with Chelsea. He also led Porto to a surprise Champions League win in 2004, defeating Ferguson's Manchester United on the way.

Ferguson has recently hinted that he may decide to finally step down from the Old Trafford hotseat. He commented after the Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa earlier this season, "Hopefully I'll get one more season… Maybe I'll be too old next year." Ferguson will be 69 at the end of the year.
